Applied Research and Development

“Research in the service of teaching” is one of the stated aims of the Munich University of Applied Sciences. This means that at our university, applied research and development are conducted in close cooperation with partners from industry, with the aim of further developing our practice-based degree courses. Thus, our university stands out when compared to the conventional research projects pursued at traditional research universities.

A key component to our distinct research program is that research at our university is intentionally broad-based, comprising the four areas of technology, economy, social sciences, and design. Groups have been established in various research areas, bringing together competencies, ideas, and expert know-how in research laboratories and research priority groups as well as in specialist centres and affiliated institutes.

We envisage that interesting research and development projects will lead to new scientific discoveries in cooperation with partners from trade and industry. At the same time, the Munich University of Applied Sciences supports teaching to provide as many students as possible –especially those pursuing research-orientated master’s degree courses – with the opportunity to conduct applied research and to complete relevant theses (bachelor’s and master’s theses) in the context of existing research projects.

Doctoral research is possible within the context of a number of research projects. Starting in mid-July 2011, in addition to receiving information about how to earn a doctoral degree, PhD students at our university will benefit from a course that covers topics such as academic writing and research skills or publishing in English.

Our university has been successful at securing public funding for research, which is essential to support a flourishing research programme. We have projects that receive public funding at the European as well as at national and regional levels. Researchers are provided with information about funding programmes and any new calls for research grant applications.

In addition to our web presence, our publication forschungsNEWS (ResearchNEWS) serves as a further source of information about research and development at the Munich University of Applied Sciences. Apart from reports about current projects, the publication contains an overview of successful proposals and awards, as well as other research news.
